Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board Plans Start-up of MCLE Program

January 27, 2006

The Minimum Continuing Legal Education Board has begun work implementing the newly established Illinois Minimum Continuing Legal Education (“MCLE”) program. Illinois Supreme Court Rules established the MCLE program. (See the new “MCLE Rules” at Article VII, Part C, Rules 791-797.) Pursuant to the Rules, the Supreme Court appointed the MCLE Board to administer the MCLE program. On December 15, 2005, the MCLE Board held its first meeting, electing officers, establishing committees and planning start-up of the MCLE program.

The MCLE Board established as it first priority selection of an Executive Director for the MCLE program. Application information will be made available in the near future. The MCLE Board is also working on leasing and equipping MCLE program offices. To keep attorneys, continuing legal education (“CLE”) providers and others informed, the MCLE Board also plans to establish a MCLE program website in the near future. Until the MCLE program website is established, however, information concerning the MCLE Board and the MCLE program will be available at a link on the official site for the Illinois Courts, http://www.state.il.us/court/

The Supreme Court Rules, including the MCLE Rules, also can be viewed at a link on that site: http://www.state.il.us/court/SupremeCourt/Rules

The requirements for accreditation of CLE are set out in Rule 795. At the present time, the MCLE program is not accepting applications for accreditation from CLE providers. After the MCLE program website is established, notice of the opening date for submission of accreditation applications will be posted and accreditation information made available.

Under the MCLE Rules, attorneys, other than those newly admitted, may begin earning CLE course or activity credits starting January 1, 2006. Consistent with Rule 795(c)(3), CLE providers offering those courses or activities may apply to the MCLE program for retroactive accreditation by submitting the necessary documentation and accreditation fee as determined by the Board. The opening date for submission of such applications will be provided on the MCLE program website.
