Newly Admitted Attorneys
Every attorney admitted to the Illinois bar on January 1, 2006 and after must complete the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys detailed in MCLE Rule 793. The MCLE Rules were amended on September 27, 2011 and affect newly-admitted attorneys based on their admission date to the Illinois bar as follows:
Attorneys Admitted on October 1, 2011 and After
Attorneys admitted on October 1, 2011 and after must complete the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys detailed in Rule 793. These requirements include the completion of a six-hour Basic Skills course or mentoring program approved by the Commission on Professionalism and nine additional hours of MCLE credit.
Attorneys Admitted from January 1, 2006 through September 30, 2011
Attorneys admitted from January 1, 2006 through September 30, 2011 have the option to complete the 15-hour Basic Skills course detailed under the prior Rule 793, or to complete the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys detailed in Rule 793 as amended September 27, 2011.
Two Steps Required For Compliance For Newly-Admitted Attorneys:
- Complete the Requirements for Newly-Admitted Attorneys; and
- Report to the MCLE Board.
Report online (select button above titled "Attorneys Report Online"), or report on paper using the MCLE Board Certification Form that will be mailed to the address you have on file with the ARDC. You must certify to the MCLE Board that you have complied with the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys within one year after the end of the month in which you were admitted to the Illinois bar. For example: If you were admitted to practice law on May 2, 2011, you have until May 31, 2012 to complete the 15-hour Basic Skills Course or the newly-admitted attorney requirements detailed in Rule 793. Then you must certify compliance with these requirements within 31 days, July 1, 2012. If you do not timely report compliance to the MCLE Board, you will incur late fees and risk being removed from the Master Roll of Attorneys. More > For attorneys admitted on October 1, 2011 and after, you must certify to the MCLE Board that you have complied with the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys detailed in Rule 793 by the last day of the month one year after you were admitted to the Illinois bar. For example: If you were admitted to practice law on May 2, 2012, you have until May 31, 2013 to complete the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys. Then you must certify that you complied with the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys within 31 days, July 1, 2013. A course that qualifies as a 15-hour Basic Skills Course or one that satisfies the requirements for attorneys admitted on October 1, 2011 or after can be found on the Board's website.

Reporting Compliance, Non-Compliance or Exemption
Newly-admitted attorneys must certify to the MCLE Board compliance with, non- compliance or a valid exemption from requirements for newly-admitted attorneys. Report online (select button above titled "Attorneys Report Online,") or report on paper using the MCLE Board Certification Form that will be mailed to you at the address you have on file with the ARDC. Make sure your address is up-to-date with the ARDC. The Board will mail a Certification Form before the end of the first year that you are licensed in Illinois. The MCLE Rules state that an attorney's failure to receive the Certification Form is not an excuse for the attorney failing to file a timely Certification Form.

Exemptions from the Newly-Admitted Attorney Requirement
Newly-admitted attorneys who previously practiced law in another state may be exempt from the newly-admitted attorney requirements detailed in Rule 793 (as amended September 27, 2011). The exemption's parameters for prior practice vary depending on the date that the attorney was sworn in to the Illinois bar. More >

Compliance Late Fees and Reinstatement Fee
There is no fee for a timely-filed MCLE certification that reports compliance with or a valid exemption from the MCLE requirements.
Attorneys who fail to timely report on the Board's website or fail to submit the required Certification Form are subject to late fees and reinstatement fees pursuant to the Fee Schedule:
- $100.00 - late fee for attorneys who timely filed certification disclosing non-compliance;
- $150.00 - late fee for attorneys who failed to file timely certification;
- $250.00 - reinstatement fee for attorneys who has been removed from the Master Roll of Attorneys for failure to comply with the MCLE requirements or to report that compliance.

Results of Non-Compliance with the Newly-Admitted Attorney Requirement
Failing to comply with the requirements for newly-admitted attorneys will result in late fees and can lead to removal of the attorney from the Master Roll of Attorneys entitled to practice law using an Illinois license. More >
