Sitting federal or state court judges
Judges With Last Names Beginning With Letters N through Z
For attorneys with last names beginning with letters N through Z, the first two-year reporting period ends June 30, 2009.
Judges still serving on June 30, 2009
If you are a federal court judge or an Illinois state court judge registered with the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission ("ARDC") as a sitting judge on June 30, 2009, the MCLE Board's records will reflect that you have a full exemption for the July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009 MCLE reporting period. You do not need to report that exemption to the Board. If, however, you are a state court judge in a state other than Illinois, you cannot register with the ARDC under judicial status so you will need to report your judicial exemption by July 31, 2009.
You may check your registration with the ARDC at (312) 565-2600. Or you may go to the ARDC's website, www.iardc.org. Select "Lawyer Search" near the top left side of the page and search your name. As a sitting federal court judge or Illinois state court judge, your Illinois Registration Status should read: Active and on Judicial Status.
Even though it is not required for sitting federal court judges and Illinois state court judges, you may report your exemption to the MCLE Board. To report online, click the button above titled "Attorneys Report Online," beginning May 1, 2009 and ending July 31, 2009. After you login with your last name, ARDC number and birth date, you may either:
- Report by clicking "Submit MCLE Report" and completing all of the steps. When you complete your report, you may print a receipt of your report to keep for your records; or
- Print the paper form by clicking "Submit MCLE Report" then click "Print Blank Certification Form." Complete the paper form and mail it to:
MCLE Board of the Supreme Court of Illinois
P.O. Box 3484
Springfield, IL 62708-3484
Reminder for state court judges serving outside Illinois: you cannot register with the ARDC under judicial status so you will need to report your judicial exemption to the Board by July 31, 2009.
Judges who retire before June 30, 2009
If you retire from the bench before June 30, 2009 and keep your license on active status, you will have a full exemption if you were registered with the ARDC on judicial status for at least 365 days of the reporting period. An attorney who served as a judge for less than 365 days during the reporting period does not have a full exemption. But a partial exemption is available if you serve as a judge for more than 60 days but less than 365 days. Please see Rule 791(c) for more information on partial exemptions. Federal and Illinois state court judges who were registered with the ARDC on judicial status do not need to report this exemption but may choose to do so on this website beginning May 1, 2009 and ending July 31, 2009. State court judges serving in other states who may claim either the full or partial exemption need to report to the Board by July 31, 2009.
